Great advances have been made by using mid-infrared technologies (mid-IR) in research labs, universities, manufacturers, hospitals, and on the battlefield. Combining our knowledge and capabilities with that of other scientists, government experts, and industry leaders, IRflex Corporation is striving to reduce optical losses of infrared-transmitting chalcogenide glass fibers by using improved chemical purification and better fiber fabrication techniques. A suite of patents relating to chalcogenide glass-based fiber optics has been exclusively licensed to IRflex from the Naval Research Laboratory. These patents, in conjunction with IRflex’s experienced personnel, enable IRflex to find cutting-edge solutions for nonlinear mid-infrared applications.

Logo for National Science Foundation Engineering Research CenterMIRTHE is a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center headquartered at Princeton University, with partners City College New York, Johns Hopkins University, Rice, Texas A&M, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The center encompasses a world-class team of engineers, chemists, physicists, environmental and bioengineers, and clinicians. MIRTHE’s goal is to develop mid-infrared (£ – 3-30 µm) optical trace gas-sensing systems based on new technologies, such as quantum cascade lasers or quartz-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy, with the ability to detect minute amounts of chemicals found in the environment or atmosphere emitted from spills, combustion, natural sources, or exhaled.
